Hicham ZRIKEM

I am the Chief Pilot and Head of Air Operations at Paradise Balloons. As Vice-president of the Moroccan hot air balloon association, I represented Morocco and the Arab world at the Grand Est Mondial Air Ballons meeting in France, witnessing the participation of 500 hot air balloons. With over 2,500 flights under my belt, I have also taken part in the French championship, and proudly hold the title of being the First Hot Air Balloon Examiner and Instructor. My journey in hot air ballooning is intertwined with the rich history of Moroccan aviation, and I continue to look forward to further adventures and achievements in this exhilarating field.

FAQ

Hot air ballooning can vary in cost depending on the location and the operator. It is generally considered a unique and memorable experience, so the cost is often seen as worth the investment. Prices typically include the flight, pre-flight briefing, and sometimes post-flight refreshments.

Hot air balloons do not have traditional steering controls like airplanes. Balloons drift with the wind, and the pilot can control the vertical movement by adjusting the temperature of the air inside the envelope to ascend or descend. By finding different wind currents at various altitudes, pilots can steer the balloon to some extent.

The capacity of a hot air balloon depends on its size and design. Standard balloons can carry between 2 to 16 passengers, but some larger balloons can accommodate more people.

The duration of a hot air balloon ride varies, but most leisurely flights last around one to two hours. Factors such as weather conditions, fuel capacity, and the pilot’s flight plan can influence the duration.

A hot air balloon is an aircraft that uses heated air to generate lift and rise off the ground. It consists of a large fabric envelope (the balloon) filled with hot air, a basket or gondola to carry passengers, and a burner to heat the air inside the balloon.

When operated by experienced pilots and maintained properly, hot air balloons are generally safe. The industry follows strict safety regulations, and pilots must undergo extensive training and obtain licenses. As with any form of aviation, there are risks, but accidents are rare.

Hot air balloons can reach various altitudes, but most recreational flights typically reach between 500 to 3,000 feet above the ground. However, some specialized balloons have reached altitudes exceeding 60,000 feet for research and record-setting purposes.

Hot air balloons work on the principle that heated air is lighter than cool air. When the air inside the balloon is heated, it becomes less dense than the surrounding cooler air. This causes the balloon to rise and float in the sky.
